[...] This “new media” world isn’t the reason why we have this apparent problem: information credibility has long been an issue, first realised by the citizens of western democracy afterÂ? the GreatÂ? WarÂ? when theyÂ? recognisedÂ? newspapers could no longer be taken as fact (due to the propaganda efforts). So its been a problem long before computers and hypertext had even been invented - it’s only that with us being in an Information Age, theÂ? quality of information has been under higher scrutiny with its abundance.
Beating google is a big ask, but still I remember the days when AltaVista was number 1, by a long mile. Where is it now you ask? Well it's still out there (to my surprise, I actually thought it was dead!), but it's probably hard for most people to believe this http://www.altavista.com/about/ was the number one engine not that long ago -- in fact Google owe their heritage to Alta Vista who pioneered search.

So why did they lose out? PageRank. Google developed a better search. History is full of market leading products that dramatically lose market share due to new innovators or bad decisions.

Google will lose market share if someone can create the better search engine. Is it likely, probably not. Possible, absolutely.

I'd like to see some advances in the hardware first!

I'm sick of sitting in front of a keyboard which hasn't really moved on since the first typewriters and a screen which, I'm sure, is buring a hole through the back of my head!

I am not sure about the search being a done business. Unless google gets it act together (both interms of making search smarter and being fairer), there is still room for people to provide that service.
